Meet BRB

I am working with Brea and Brittany for the group project. We were all excited when we started discussing our different proposals for the assignment. The most popular were the proposals to change the time the diner opened up on the weekend and getting a bus to run during the weekdays from South to North campus. These were ideas we could all relate to, which is why they were ultimately our final choices. We decided to focus on getting the school to open the diner up earlier, because let's be honest: College kids care a lot more about food. I think we have a good group dynamic: We all have a lot of energy, all of our ideas were concise and we all would love to see the dining hall opened earlier.

I will complete my group’s summary and professional letters tasks. I will discuss with my partners the main points, arguments, resolutions, advantages and disadvantages of our plan to have breakfast moved to an earlier time on the weekend. As students we have all woken up early on the weekends. Sometimes this is a result of our body clocks, interviews, work or to get a head start on studying, but only to realize or remember that there is no breakfast until 11 a.m. Students attending sporting events are also left to figure out breakfast for themselves if they don’t have a kitchen, which can curtail their ability to tailgate or get in line for the games. This is troublesome because most students do not want to go off campus for food, but do not want to wait for to become available late in the morning. My task is to neatly and concisely detail this in a professional letter to the dining services.

Convo with Ashley

Ashley is a junior studying public relations, who is originally from northern New Jersey. She is an only child, very athletic, and she likes to play and watch sports. She lives with two male roommates, she is currently taking 18 credits and working two jobs. Thus she is busy in terms of her work schedule. As for working in groups, she said she's a really good team member, because she tries to be cooperative and objective first and for most. She thinks it is important for everyone to pull their own weight and contribute, but at the same time she likes a laid back work environment. She tends to sometimes take on the leadership role accidentally, because she likes to get things done and does not mind taking responsibility for certain aspects of the project. However, it balances out with her willingness to share power roles and anything else it takes to get a good grade and have a successful experience. For the five topics, her favorite discusses Nite Ride and how the purpose of this system is to protect Maryland students who are out during at-risk hours. If a student is intoxicated, though, the bus driver will not allow the student to board. Ultimately, she thinks that defeats the entire purpose because it is dangerous to neglect a student who may be under the influence to protect themselves or get home otherwise.

I told Ashley that I am the oldest child of my parents, and I like to think as a result of that I am very strong willed and independent. I have high expectations of myself, and I enjoy being successful. I consider myself a natural leader, in the sense that I do not like to boss my teammates around, but I like to lead the way the work gets done and keep things on track. I do not like having to nag people, but I will do so, if the deadline for an assignment is getting close. I enjoy being in charge, but not at the expense of my team. I am always reliable, organized and punctual in my groups. I can also be very serious when completing an assignment. At the end of the day though, I love to have fun. I want to be able to enjoy the assignment and working through it with my teammates. I am always cracking jokes, and trying to make the work feel less like work. Of the five ideas I came up with for my five topic memo, I like the one I proposed on working on getting the steam vents on campus taken care of the most. I was actually slightly burned by one on the way to dorm one day, and I recognized the reason I did not walk in the street is because cars could not see me. I did not want to be hit, but I also did not want to walk in the mud either, so I was burned on my leg. I think this is something that can be resolved with a little attention.

You Can Get to Know Me

I am a junior sports broadcast journalism major. I am from Fort Washington, MD, which is 30 minutes down the road in Prince George’s County. I am currently doing an internship at USA TODAY Sports, and I got to go to the White House earlier this month to cover the Miami Heat meeting the president. I want to be an anchor on ESPN one day, but for now, I spend a lot my time writing. I have also interned at The Baltimore Sun, The Oklahoman and USA TODAY at an earlier time. I was just accepted for an internship with ESPN The Magazine this summer, so I am very excited about deciding my summer internship.
I worked at The Diamondback, Maryland's independent, student-run newspaper for eight months and Lacrosse Magazine for 11 months. I am one of the six founders of Maryland's newest online publication, "Stories Beneath the Shell." I am an active member of the National Association of Black Journalists and its student chapter, the Maryland Association of Black Journalists. I am also an active member of Maryland's student chapter for the Association for Women in Sports Media.
If I can I play basketball every day. I am an avid music fan, I listen to anything with great lyrics and a solid beat, and if I am lucky enough I like to cook. I love going to concerts and being towards the front or directly in front of the stage. I actually shook the hand of one of my favorite artists, Frank Ocean, when he was at his ChannelOrange Tour two summers ago. That is easily one of my favorite memories and moments. I am curious person, and it is rare that I say no to a new idea or adventure. With that being said, I like to spend a lot of time with my various groups of friends. I am very talkative and a huge extravert. It does not take a lot for me to warm up to people once I have had time to observe and get a feel for them.

In terms of how I work in groups, I know I am probably one of the most distracting and funny people in a working group if there's a good vibe. I like to have fun when I get assigned to work in a group, but if I am the only playful one, then I tend to be really serious and just try to get the project over with. I like to be fair about how the work is distributed but also understanding when things come up, because things happens. I am pretty chill, but I do take my grades and holding up my end of the work seriously.

Web Conference

Brea explained how she is on the cheerleading team so that takes a lot of her time. She gets to cheer at all the football games and some of the men’s and women’s basketball games. She is also on the nationals/competitive cheer team, and it travels and compete in tournaments. Brea is a family science major, and after school, she wants to work and help young kids in need. She came to Maryland on scholarship because she was originally on the acrobatics and tumbling team, but after her freshmen year, the school cut eight sports teams. That team was one of them, but she got to keep the scholarship she had though. She told me she’s from Ellicott City, Md., in Howard County.

I told her that I am a junior sports broadcast journalism major. I am from Fort Washington, MD, which is 30 minutes down the road in Prince George’s County. I am currently doing an internship at USA TODAY Sports, and I got to go to the White House earlier this month to cover the Miami Heat meeting the president. I have also interned at The Baltimore Sun, The Oklahoman and USA TODAY while I was in high school. I just got accepted for an internship with ESPN The Magazine this summer, so I explained how much I love sports.

Brea told me she cheered at the basketball game that President Obama came too.
I told her that I play basketball everyday if I can. I am an avid music fan, I listen to anything with great lyrics and a solid beat, and if I am lucky enough I like to cook.

In terms of how I work in groups, I told her that I know I am probably one of the most distracting and funny people in a working group if there's a good vibe. I like to have fun when I get assigned to work in a group, but if I am the only funny one, then I tend to be really serious and just try to get the project over with. I went on to say that I like to be fair about how the work is distributed, but also understanding when things come up, because that definitely happens. I am pretty chill, but I do take my grades and holding up my end of the work seriously.

Brea ended with describing how she thinks she definitely works well in a group. She has grown up playing on sports teams her whole life, so she knows what it is like to be on a team and have to work together to get the goals done. She also likes to have fun and make it as easy as possible. She likes to try to make it not like work and make it as interesting as possible too.
